South African side Orlando Pirates release Black Stars goalkeeper Richard Ofori

South Africa’s Premier Soccer League side Orlando Pirates have released Ghana goalkeeper Richard Ofori officially. He is one four players released by Pirates including former Under 20 star Kermit Erasmus.

This brings Ofori’s four year run with the South African club to an end after the former Wa All-Stars player joined from fellow PSL side Maritzburg United.

Ofori won three trophies with Orlando Pirates including two MTN 8 titles with the 2023 title having Ofori aggravate an injury that forced him to be omitted from Ghana’s 2022 FIFA World Cup squad.

The 30 year old is one of five goalkeepers at the club and his release comes at a time where the Black Stars player has struggled for playing time.

Ofori is now a free agent and could continue his stay in South Africa by latching on to another PSL side and return to compete in the Ghana Premier League.

He is coming off a poor 2023 AFCON campaign with Ghana that had the Black Stars fail to win a game and exit at the group stage.

Ofori

Ofori was heavily criticized for conceding an avoidable corner kick Mozambique scored from directly to draw 2-2 with Ghana and prevent the Black Stars from progressing to the Round of 16 stage. (Click highlighted text to read full story)
