Ghana defender Tariq Lamptey has voiced his confidence in the Black Stars’ ability to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the USA, Mexico, and Canada.
Lamptey, in an interview with 3Sports, emphasised the importance of focusing on each game while working diligently to achieve their goals.
The four-time African champions had a mixed start to their qualifying campaign, with a victory over Madagascar and a defeat against Comoros.
The loss to Comoros put the team under pressure to secure positive results in their subsequent games and they rose to the occasion this month with two great victories.
The Black Stars delivered spirited performances to secure a 2-1 win against Mali in Bamako and a thrilling 4-3 victory over Central African Republic.
These crucial wins have propelled Ghana to second place in their group, tied on nine points with leaders Comoros. The Black Stars are now in a strong position to contend for the top spot and direct qualification for the World Cup.
“I think we definitely believe in ourselves [to qualify for the World Cup]; we have the talent as we know. We have to focus on what the coach has to say to us. Take it game by game, work as hard as possible and hopefully the results will show. We worked hard in the week, the build-up to the last two games and we got the results we deserved so hopefully we can keep pushing and qualify,” Lamptey said.

Lamptey, who made his Ghana debut against Brazil in France, has managed just eight appearances for the Black Stars over two years, primarily due to injuries.
The 23-year-old, born in Hillingdon, United Kingdom to Ghanaian parents, switched his allegiance to Ghana in 2022 after playing for England’s youth teams.
