Ghanaian forward Kwadwo Duah made a significant impact in Switzerland’s opening game against Hungary at Euro 2024, showcasing his goalscoring prowess in a crucial 3-1 victory.

The match, held at Cologne Stadium, saw Switzerland make a winning start to their campaign, with Duah playing a pivotal role.

Kwadwo Duah, born in London and of Ghanaian descent, moved to Switzerland at a young age and recently made his debut for the national team just 11 days ago.

The 27-year-old forward, who plays alongside fellow Ghanaian Bernard Tekpetey at Ludogorets, marked his Euro 2024 debut by scoring Switzerland’s first goal just 12 minutes into the match. His inclusion by coach Murat Yakin proved to be a masterstroke, as Duah’s goal set the tone for the Swiss team’s dominant performance.

Switzerland doubled their lead just before halftime, with Michel Aebischer finding the back of the net, giving the Swiss a comfortable 2-0 advantage going into the break. Despite a spirited fightback from Hungary in the second half, with Barnabas Varga scoring from a brilliant cross by Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai, Switzerland maintained their composure.

As Hungary pushed for an equaliser, Switzerland sealed their victory in stoppage time with a lovely lobbed finish from substitute Breel Embolo over Hungarian goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi, ensuring the Swiss team’s strong start in the tournament.

Duah’s impressive form has been evident in the recently concluded season, where he scored 13 goals in 24 games for Ludogorets in the Bulgarian top flight. His partnership with Bernard Tekpetey at the club level has been fruitful, although Tekpetey missed out on a call-up to the Black Stars.
