France faced disappointment in their final Group D match at Euro 2024 as they were held to a draw by Poland, despite Kylian Mbappe scoring his first goal of the tournament.

The result left Didier Deschamps’ side in second place in the group standings.

Needing a win to secure top spot, France took the lead when Mbappe converted a penalty in the 56th minute, following a foul on Ousmane Dembele by Jakub Kiwior. It marked Mbappe’s first goal at a European Championship, coming after his return to the starting lineup following a broken nose.

However, France’s momentum faltered, and a clumsy challenge by Dayot Upamecano on Robert Lewandowski led to a penalty for Poland in the 79th minute. Mike Maignan initially saved Lewandowski’s effort, only for the goal to be retaken due to encroachment by the goalkeeper. Lewandowski calmly slotted the penalty into the corner, securing his fourth goal at the European Championships and levelling the score.

Despite the draw, France secured qualification to the knockout stage as the second-placed team in Group D. They will now face the runner-up from Group E in the next round, seeking to bounce back and continue their quest for European glory.
