Austria delivered a standout performance at Euro 2024, securing a place in the last 16 as Group D winners by defeating the Netherlands.

Despite a challenging draw against both the Dutch and France, Ralf Rangnick’s squad won two out of three matches, finishing at the top of the group standings.

The Netherlands, already assured of progressing to the knockout stages, will advance as one of the best third-placed teams, with France taking the second spot.

Austria’s victory was well-deserved, showcasing their spirit, desire, and determination, particularly in responding to a strong start by the Netherlands in the second half.

Austria took an early lead in the sixth minute when Donyell Malen turned Alexander Prass’s dangerous cross into his own net. Although Malen later had a chance to redeem himself but missed, Austria maintained control, often keeping the Netherlands from touching the ball.

Rangnick’s team had opportunities to extend their lead through Marcel Sabitzer and Marko Arnautovic. However, the Netherlands equalised just 75 seconds into the second half with Cody Gakpo’s curling finish.

This sparked a more aggressive Dutch attack, with Virgil van Dijk’s header narrowly missing the target.

Austria weathered the Dutch storm and regained the lead with Romano Schmid’s powerful header, deflecting off Stefan de Vrij into the net.

Memphis Depay appeared to salvage a draw for the Dutch with a close-range volley, which was cleared by the video assistant referee for handball.

Ultimately, Sabitzer secured Austria’s victory, breaking through to score and sending Austrian fans into celebration.
