The National Sports Authority (NSA) has firmly denied reports that the Borteyman Sports Complex was recently used for a church activity.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Venue Manager Majeed Bawa clarified the situation following widespread criticism over the alleged use of the $145 million facility for non-sports purposes.

Over the weekend, reports circulated that the complex had been rented out for church activities, sparking backlash given the historical neglect of sports facilities post-major events.

Bawa responded by explaining that the University of Ghana, University of Professional Studies, Valley View University, and other institutions had visited the complex as part of a tour, not for a church service.

According to Bawa, “A church was supposed to provide transportation for the students, and subsequently, a Deputy Minister was scheduled to give them a lecture on leadership. Therefore, they were granted access to the hall for this purpose. On the day of the visit, the facility had just hosted a two-day badminton competition, and the equipment was still in place.”

Bawa further clarified, “As the Venue Manager, I was present at the facility and noticed a church banner in the hall. The explanation provided was that the church facilitated the trip, hence the presence of the banners. It is important to note that there were many Muslim students in attendance, some of whom were wearing hijabs.”

The Borteyman Sports Complex is equipped with various amenities, including a 1,000-seat swimming pool, a versatile sports hall accommodating up to 1,000 spectators for activities such as basketball and badminton, a 500-seat temporary dome for sports like handball, volleyball, and martial arts, and a five-court tennis complex.
