Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has signed a contract extension with the club, securing his position until 2026.

The Dutchman, who joined the club in 2022, has had a mixed tenure but has shown enough promise to earn the club’s confidence for a longer-term commitment.

“I am very pleased to have reached an agreement with the club to continue working together,” said the 54-year-old manager. “Looking back at the past two years, we can reflect with pride on two trophies and many examples of progression from where we were when I joined. However, we must also be clear that there is still lots of hard work ahead.”

During Ten Hag’s first season at Old Trafford, United finished third in the Premier League and ended their six-year wait for silverware by winning the Carabao Cup against Newcastle.

However, his second season was more challenging, with United finishing eighth in the Premier League and being knocked out of the Champions League group stages. Despite these setbacks, a crucial 2-1 victory against Manchester City in May’s FA Cup final was pivotal in securing Ten Hag’s position.

Ten Hag, who previously managed Ajax, has now won two trophies in two years at Manchester United.

The club’s board structure has undergone significant changes since Sir Jim Ratcliffe took a 27.7% stake in the club, aiming to bring more stability and long-term success.

Sporting director Dan Ashworth expressed confidence in Ten Hag’s leadership: “This group of players and staff have already shown they are capable of competing and winning at the top level; now we need to do it more consistently. With our strengthened football leadership team now in place, we are looking forward to working hand-in-hand with Erik to achieve our shared ambitions for this football club.”

Erik ten Hag will lead the Red Devils in the Europa League next season, in addition to their domestic competitions, as he continues to build on the foundations laid over the past two years.
