0 Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Director of Elections for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has revealed that the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and other development partners are ready to support an independent forensic audit of Ghana’s provisional voters’ register, provided the Electoral Commission (EC) agrees to the process.
Following a closed-door meeting between the NDC and the EC, Dr. Boamah expressed disappointment over the EC’s refusal to allow the forensic audit, which the NDC believes is necessary to address discrepancies in the voters’ roll ahead of the 2024 general elections.
Speaking to the press, Dr. Boamah stated, “The UNDP is ready and willing to provide the support only if the Electoral Commission will write and request the support.” He also highlighted that other development partners are eager to assist in ensuring the electoral process is transparent and credible.
According to the NDC, a forensic audit involving independent experts is crucial to restoring public confidence in the electoral register. Dr. Boamah stressed that bringing in external bodies to scrutinize the register would ensure fairness, adding, “You can bring experts from the various political parties together and add another expert superior to them for them to look at these things transparently.”
The NDC has raised concerns about illegal voter transfers and system vulnerabilities within the EC’s processes, which they believe could compromise the integrity of the upcoming elections. Despite these concerns, the EC has so far declined to pursue an independent audit, raising questions about the level of transparency in the electoral process.
Dr. Boamah remains firm in his belief that the forensic audit, supported by international partners, is key to assuring voters of the register’s credibility. “It doesn’t take away the fact that a forensic audit is what it will take to assure Ghanaians,” he reiterated.
