On September 10, 2024, Ghana observed World Suicide Prevention Day, joining the global community in raising awareness about suicide and its prevention.

The Mental Health Authority, spearheading national efforts to highlight the importance of this issue, especially as recent data reveal a worrying rise in suicidal behavior across the country.

In the first half of 2024 alone, Ghana reported 543 suicide attempts and 81 completed suicides. This marks a sharp increase from the 594 attempts and 48 completed suicides recorded throughout all of 2023.

Of particular concern is the growing impact on young people aged 15 to 29. The Greater Accra, Eastern, and Central regions have recorded the highest number of suicide attempts, with Greater Accra leading in completed suicides.

This year’s theme for World Suicide Prevention Day, “Changing the Narrative,” emphasizes the importance of breaking the silence surrounding suicide and addressing the stigma that often prevents people from seeking help.

Open conversations about suicide can play a crucial role in prevention. Recognizing the warning signs of suicidal thoughts and behaviors, especially among young people, is key to making a difference.

For those in need of support, the National Suicide Help Line is available- 0800 678 678. By speaking up and seeking help, we can work together to prevent suicide and save lives.
