African Union (AU) Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat expressed grave concern on Thursday over the escalating post-election violence in Mozambique.
Following the announcement of the final results of the country’s October 9 general elections by the Constitutional Council, which declared Daniel Chapo as the winner, the violence has intensified, resulting in the loss of many lives and widespread unrest.
In a statement, Chairperson Mahamat offered his condolences to the families of the victims and called for a peaceful resolution to the crisis. He urged Mozambique’s security services to exercise restraint and uphold law and order amidst the turmoil.
Mahamat also called on the Mozambican government, along with political and social leaders, to prioritize dialogue and seek a peaceful solution to the crisis. He emphasized the need to prevent further loss of life and damage to property, stressing the importance of preserving stability and peace within the country.
The AU Chairperson reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to working with Mozambican authorities and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) to bring an end to the violence and safeguard the country’s constitutional democracy.
Local media reports have indicated that over 100 civilians have lost their lives in the post-election unrest, with hundreds more injured. The AU’s appeal underscores the urgency of resolving the situation and restoring peace in Mozambique.
