Gifty Klenam, a former two-term Member of Parliament (MP) for Lower West Akim under the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has officially defected to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The former MP publicly announced her decision on Thursday morning (January 30, 2025) after obtaining her NDC membership card in the Anlo Constituency of the Volta Region.
Addressing journalists, Klenam emphasized that the NDC aligns with her personal values and urged other disillusioned NPP members to be bold and make the switch.
“Upon consultation with my family, I decided to join the NDC because it aligns with my values and vision for mother Ghana,” she stated.
She also expressed confidence in the NDC’s 2024 manifesto, asserting that it provides the best blueprint for Ghana’s development. According to her, after analyzing the party’s policies, she believes John Dramani Mahama’s leadership will transform the country and deliver prosperity to Ghanaians.
While her exact role in the NDC remains unclear, Klenam has signaled her willingness to serve in any capacity. Her immediate focus, she said, is to connect with the NDC grassroots, empower them, and ensure they find opportunities within the country rather than seeking greener pastures abroad.
Klenam’s defection has sparked discussions within Ghana’s political landscape, as she was a prominent figure in the NPP.
She served in the Fourth and Fifth Parliaments of the Fourth Republic and later as CEO of the Ghana Export Promotion Centre (GEPC) in 2017 under the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration.
