Ghana’s Minister-designate for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has suggested that recent appointments made by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to the Black Stars’ technical team could be reviewed.
The GFA strengthened the national team’s technical staff following Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) under head coach Otto Addo. The adjustments were made ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, which resume in March.
Among the new additions is experienced German coach Winfried Schaffer, who joins as the technical advisor and football director for both the Black Stars and the GFA.
Ghana U20 head coach Desmond Offei has been named as assistant coach, replacing German Joseph Laumann. He will work alongside John Paintsil and Fatawu Dauda, who have retained their roles as assistant coaches.
Additionally, Kris Perquy has been appointed as the team’s psychologist, while Gregory De Grauwe takes on the role of video analyst.
Despite these appointments, Adams has indicated that the decisions will be assessed for practical reasons.
“We will review the GFA’s new appointment onto the Black Stars technical team,” he told Sporty FM.
“This will be my first engagement with the GFA. Can we get a cheaper option than Winfried Schaffer, can we pay him less, or does his contract allow for a review? We will look at all that,” he added.
Otto Addo, who signed a three-year contract with an option for a further year, was heavily scrutinised after Ghana’s AFCON qualification failure. However, the GFA’s Executive Council has decided to retain him as head coach.
