Ashanti Region: Council of State elections halted as ‘Machomen’ disrupt counting process

The Council of State elections in the Ashanti Region have been halted as the process has been marred with chaos.

On Tuesday, February 11, 2025, there was confusion at the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council where voting had been completed and counting was about to begin until ‘machomen’ evaded the premises disrupted the counting process of the council of state elections.

They destroyed all the ballots just when the EC officials were about to begin counting. All 86 delegates have voted for the twelve candidates and were awaiting the winner to be announced when the chaos started.

According to reports by TV3’s Ashanti Regional Correspondent, Ibrahim Abubakar, EC officials have exited the premises of the Regional Coordinating Council and calm has been restored.

The voting process which begun smoothly but was interrupted and turned chaotic when the counting was about to start after sorting had been done.

Ibrahim Abubakar reports that the election was a keen contest between a staunch member of the New Patriotic Party, Nana Nkansah Boadu and the former Ashanti Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress, Yaw Obimpeh. It is unclear who ordered the heavily built men and which candidate they support.

It is expected that a new date will be announced for the elections to be held again considering what transpired.

Meanwhile, in the Upper East Region, the paramount Chief of the Chiana Traditional Area, Thomas More Ditundini Adiali has won the Council of State elections.

The paramount Chief beat six strong contenders to emerge winner after his second attempt to become a member of council of state.
