“There is a need to prepare customized response plans tailored to Korean culture and the circumstances of each local government.”
[Nam Nan-woo, Mobile Reporter] Sejong Special Self-Governing City Council member Kim Hak-seo (Jeonui, Jeondong, Sojeong) attended the 5th regular meeting of the ‘Regional Extinction Response Special Committee’ of the Korea City and Provincial Council Chairman’s Association held in Jeonju for two days from April 16th to 17th. Attended the meeting as an appointed member.
Attending the meeting on this day were members of the Regional Extinction Response Special Committee, comprised of city and provincial council members from metropolitan local governments across the country. Kim Dong-young, senior research fellow at the Jeonbuk Research Institute, gave a presentation on the topic ‘Population policy cases and regional extinction response strategies’, and was based on various domestic and international cases, such as the current status of population policies of the Korean government and local governments and the dual address system, to overcome the problem of regional extinction. A way forward was suggested.
Next, based on the presentations, the attendees freely discussed the need to establish related systems and explore various measures to respond to the crisis of local extinction.
Rep. Kim Hak-seo said, “Overcoming the problem of birth rate is the most important task in order to overcome local extinction and the continuous development of the Republic of Korea. We will study why young people find it difficult to get married and have children, and prepare a response plan that suits our country’s culture and the situation of each local government.” “It is necessary to do this,” he said.
Representative Kim continued, “Sejong City is securing proven manpower by inviting the families of multicultural female marriage immigrants to resolve the shortage of labor force,” and added, “To respond to regional extinction, these realistic countermeasures are included for each region.” “It is necessary to discuss the policies that have been developed in a special committee,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Special Committee on Local Extinction Response is established and operated in accordance with the ‘Regulations of the Special Committee on Regional Extinction Response of the Korea City and Provincial Council Chairman’s Association’ and is composed of 17 metropolitan city and provincial council members from all over the country to develop regional extinction response policies, conduct research, promote systems and legislation, etc. activities are being carried out.
