0 Western Regional Minister, Joseph Nelson, has acknowledged the contributions and growing competitiveness of the cement industry in Ghana.
According to him, the industry, with its current growth, has the potential to realise the government’s ambitious infrastructure development programme, aimed at repositioning the country.
He stated that the competitive cement industry plays a crucial role in driving the government’s planned infrastructure development programme, known as ‘The Big Push.’
Mr Nelson made these remarks while addressing the management of Dangote Cement, one of the cement manufacturing companies operating in Eshiem, Sekondi-Takoradi, on Thursday, March 13.
He called on Dangote Cement to improve their performance by establishing 24-hour operations to further support the country’s economy.
The Minister mentioned that under the administration of President John Dramani Mahama, the country’s infrastructure development would be improved through the ‘Big Push’ agenda, as outlined in the manifesto of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) party.
The “Big Push” programme is a key initiative by the NDC aimed at accelerating Ghana’s infrastructure development.
A substantial GH¢13.85 billion has been allocated in the 2025 budget to launch its implementation.
This programme is part of the NDC’s broader plan to reset the country and provide relief to its citizens.
With a total investment of over US$10 billion, the “Big Push” programme is expected to drive economic growth, create jobs, and enhance the overall quality of life for Ghanaians.
Key initiatives under the “Big Push” programme include the “Accelerated Infrastructure Development”, focusing primarily on developing critical infrastructure such as roads, bridges, and public buildings.
In addition, job creation will be a central focus, providing employment opportunities in the construction and infrastructure development sectors.
Regarding economic growth, Mr Nelson noted that the government aims to boost economic growth through increased investment in infrastructure development.
Overall, he emphasised that the “Big Push” programme is a significant initiative by the NDC administration to stimulate Ghana’s economic development and improve citizens’ livelihoods.
The Plant Director of Dangote Cement, Sunil Kumar, who received the Minister and his entourage, explained that the company is currently producing one thousand metric tonnes of cement daily and is looking to expand its operational activities in line with the government’s 24-hour economic policy.
He said that the expansion would take into account all the necessary factors to position the company effectively.
He assured the Minister of their commitment to establishing a strong working relationship with the government.
The Country Manager, Elango K., also assured the Minister of their readiness to enhance operations and collaborate effectively with relevant stakeholders whenever required.
Dangote Cement has been operating in Ghana since 2011, initially importing and bagging bulk cement at its terminal in Tema, before establishing the new processing plant at Eshiem in Sekondi-Takoradi about one and a half years ago.
