Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has stated that Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Benjamin Asare is the number one goalkeeper in the national team at the moment following back-to-back clean sheets at the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

Asare, 32, was handed his debut callup earlier in March and was handed a start in a 5-0 thrashing of Chad at the Accra Sports stadium on March 21.

Addo gave the Hearts of Oak captain the nod once again as Ghana defeated Madagascar 3-0 on Monday night to stretch their lead at the top of Group I to five points.

“I think the next game is in June and at the moment he’s the number one. We decided for him. He did well in training. We have a good situation where the keepers are pushing each other,” Otto Addo revealed to 3Sports after the game.

The former Dortmund star was also full of praise for Ati Zigi and Wollacott, who sat out the two games for Asare.

“[I am] really thankful with the way Ati Zigi and Wollacott also behaved during this week and the way they also tried to push Benjamin, to help him and support him. I don’t take it for granted. Big props for them. [Asare] deserved it. I’m very happy for him.”

The Black Stars are currently top of their group with 15 points and are in pole position to secure a place at the World Cup for the fifth time in their history.
