President of Ashanti Gold, Dr. Kwaku Frimpong, has disclosed ongoing discussions with AngloGold and a prospective Member of Parliament (MP) regarding the transfer of control over the Obuasi-based football team.

Champion as widely known is currently under a 10-year ban from all football-related activities due to his involvement in alleged betting and match manipulation.

The ban stemmed from suspicions arising from a high-scoring game between Ashanti Gold and Inter Allies during the 2020/21 league season, leading to both team’s demotion to Division Two for match manipulation.

In efforts to reclaim their football status, Ashanti Gold has been in constant communication with the Ghana Football Association (GFA), seeking assistance to regain their position as revealed in a statement earlier this week.

In a recent interview with Asempa FM, Dr. Kwaku Frimpong revealed plans to transfer ownership of the club to an aspiring MP from Obuasi, with discussions underway with AngloGold for the transition.

AngloGold Ashanti has agreed to transfer leadership of the team to a candidate running for the Obuasi parliamentary seat. We arrived happy, but some people have different ideas, so I will give it to them. However, we are still in negotiations, which may involve a financial reimbursement. I will thus turn over the team to them once everything is finished,” stated Dr. Frimpong.

Champion urged supporters to remain composed and support the team’s new management following the imminent transition, emphasising Ashanti Gold’s significance and the desire to restore the club to its former glory.

With Ashgold, a large club, we don’t play around. Examining the league following Ashgold’s departure reveals that its value has decreased. We are now hoping that the team can return to its rightful place. The fans should remain composed; once everything has been settled, the team will experience its heyday again,” he added.

Should Ashanti Gold be reinstated, they may restart in Division Two as a consequence of the Inter Allies match-fixing scandal, marking a new chapter in the club’s journey.
