Kumasi Airport, Now Agyeman Prempeh I International Airport, Commissioned

The Agyeman Prempeh I International Airport, located in Kumasi, the capital city of the Ashanti Region of Ghana, is a state-of-the-art facility aimed at boosting regional connectivity and economic development. Named after the prominent Ashanti king, the airport reflects the nation’s commitment to modernizing infrastructure.

The President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo, joined the eminent King Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu to commission the beautiful edifice on the 10th of May, 2024.

Established in 1943, the Prempeh I International Airport has undergone several key developments. In 1959 in the areas of runway and taxiway construction, navigational facilities, and development of the necessary human resources to enhance operations.

In 1993, the construction of a new terminal marked the beginning of the modernization process. Phase one, consisting of the newly rehabilitated runway installed with an Aeronautical Ground Lighting system, was inaugurated on December 15th, 2014. This paved the way for domestic airlines to commence night operations.

In 2018, phase two started with the construction of a new terminal building to accommodate 800,000 passengers per annum, two boarding bridges, a road network, perimeter fence, a power station, and a car parking lot among other facilities. The estimated cost for this expansion work was  £66,350,000 .

Phase three of the Airport expansion project involves the extension of the existing runway pavement from 1,981 meters to 2,320 meters, two Apron parking stands, construction of a new taxi link, a fire station, and Air Traffic Control buildings among others. The cost for this phase is estimated at £58,900,000 .

The airport’s inauguration signals a significant milestone in Ghana’s aviation sector, facilitating increased air traffic and promoting tourism and trade in the Ashanti Region and beyond.
