Bayern Munich are in advanced discussions with Burnley over the potential appointment of Vincent Kompany as their new manager.

Kompany, 38, is expected to bring his Burnley backroom staff to Munich, including former Wales international Craig Bellamy.

The surprise move comes as Bayern struggle to find a replacement for Thomas Tuchel, whose departure was confirmed last week after an initially announced exit in February.

Several high-profile names, including Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso, Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann, and current Austria coach Ralf Rangnick, have turned down the role. Efforts to persuade Tuchel to stay on also failed, leaving Bayern in a challenging position.

Despite Burnley’s relegation this season, Kompany has built a respectable reputation through his managerial stints at Anderlecht and Burnley.

His time at Anderlecht and a solid start with Burnley showcased his coaching potential, even though the Clarets did not meet their pre-season expectations. Kompany’s ability to speak German, having played in the Bundesliga for Hamburg, is seen as an asset for the role at Bayern.

The Bundesliga giants believe Kompany is keen on the move, and both clubs are working towards agreeing on a compensation fee.

Kompany signed a five-year contract extension with Burnley in 2023 but has remained tight-lipped about his future following Burnley’s recent home defeat to Nottingham Forest.

The Belgian, a four-time Premier League winner with Manchester City, took over as Burnley manager in June 2022 in his first managerial role in England.

Bayern Munich are coming off their worst season in over a decade, having failed to win a single trophy.

They finished third in the Bundesliga, losing the title to Bayer Leverkusen, exited the Champions League in the semi-finals to Real Madrid, and were eliminated from the DFB Pokal by a third-tier team.
