Atalanta boss Gian Piero Gasperini has shut down the idea of coaches getting judged by their trophy haul after Atalanta clinched their first-ever Europa League title in history after beating Bayer Leverkusen.

Gasperini’s long wait for silverware ended as he secured his first trophy as a manager. Atalanta broke Bayer Leverkusen’s unbeaten record, clinching their first major title in 62 years and their inaugural European title in history.

However,, Gasperini believes winning the trophy doesn’t make him better or worse than he was, thereby refuting the ‘trophy logic’ in the sport.

I don’t understand this thing about being judged by trophies. It’s not like I’m any better now than I was this afternoon,” he said

The Italian further stated how incredible his players were in their run to winning the trophy.

I think we wrote history, also for the way we won. Extraordinary, we repeated Liverpool, Lisbon… Sporting they won the league, when we faced Liverpool they were first in the Premier League… Incredible. The boys were extraordinary, a memorable performance,” he added.

Atalanta’s win means that as many as six Italian teams may play in the Champions League next season if La Dea finish fifth in Serie A.
