Athletic Club head coach Ernesto Valverde has revealed that Iñaki Williams has been playing with a hidden glass shard in his foot for an astounding two years.

The striker unknowingly carried a two-centimeter shard of glass embedded in the sole of his left foot during this period.

The discovery of this foreign object came to light when Iñaki underwent surgery on Tuesday to treat a painful scar on his left foot. It was during this procedure that doctors uncovered the piece of glass that had been lodged in his foot for an extended period.

Iñaki himself shared an image on his Instagram stories, displaying the impediment – the piece of glass that had been removed from his foot earlier this week.

According to Valverde, the origin of this peculiar situation dates back two years when Iñaki suffered a deep foot wound during a vacation after stepping on a piece of glass.

Remarkably, despite having this foreign object in his foot, Iñaki achieved remarkable feats, including breaking the record for consecutive games played and winning the Copa del Rey.

“Iñaki Williams has broken a record for consecutive games played and has won a Copa del Rey whilst having a two-centimetre glass stuck in the sole of his foot,” Valverde marveled on Friday. “It’s amazing, but it’s like that.”

Valverde further elaborated, “He [Iñaki] has given me permission to tell this story because it is worth telling. For a few months, he was reporting discomfort in his scar. He was undergoing treatment, and after the Copa del Rey final – on April 6 – he had an MRI, and he still had a glass stuck in the sole of his foot. When they stitched him up [two years ago], they left a glass of about two centimeters, and it was already approaching the bone or a tendon.”

The revelation left both the doctor and Valverde in a state of disbelief and laughter, as Valverde recounted, “The doctor and I started laughing [when we found out] because we couldn’t believe it.”

The 29-year-old has scored 14 goals in 39 appearances across all competitions this season and is ruled out of the final league game against Rayo Vallecano.
