[Mobile Reporter Nam Nan-woo] Sejong Special Self-Governing City Council member Kim Jae-hyung (Go Undong, Democratic Party of Korea) ordered Sejong City to actively engage in attracting and supporting foreign students during an administrative audit under the Planning and Coordination Office on the 3rd.
Representative Kim Jae-hyung said, “Accurate data is essential to establish and promote policies related to international students. “It is regrettable that statistics management at the city level is still not possible, even though last year’s administration requested that a foreign student database be established and managed in accordance with city ordinance,” he said.
In addition, “According to the public data portal, the number of foreign students in Sejong City has been continuously increasing over the past three years, but there are no city-level support measures this year as last year. “We need to strengthen interest and support for them,” he emphasized.
In addition, Rep. Kim said, “Many local governments, including Gwangju, Daejeon, South Chungcheong, Jeonbuk, North Chungcheong, and Busan, are already carrying out various activities to attract foreign students, and the government has also set a goal of attracting 300,000 foreign students by 2027.” He criticized Sejong City, saying, “In contrast, Sejong City is not preparing any plans or policies, let alone strengthening cooperation with local universities and carrying out activities to attract foreign students in line with government policies.”
In response, the external cooperation officer of Sejong City responded, “We will actively engage in attracting and supporting foreign students in the future, including including a strategy to attract foreign students in the RISE project in cooperation with the relevant department of the youth policy officer.”
Rep. Kim Jae-hyung said, “Sejong City is by no means free from the crisis of regional extinction caused by a nationwide decline in the school-age population and a deepening outflow of talent to the metropolitan area. “I hope that the city will now recognize the importance of attracting and supporting foreign students and actively pursue related policies and projects,” he said.
