“Sound finances, a promise not to pass on debt and burden to future generations… Revitalizing the economy”

[Reporter Kim Sang-il] Prime Minister Han Deok-soo said on the 11th, “The government will humbly honor the will of the people in the general election and look back on the overall state affairs to see if there were any shortcomings in meeting the people’s expectations.”

In his plenary remarks at the 16th Cabinet meeting on this day, Prime Minister Han said, “I would like to thank the citizens who exercised their precious rights in the 22nd National Assembly election and the public officials who worked hard to manage the election in a fair and transparent manner.”

He continued, “We will work harder to promote reform tasks for the recovery of the people’s economy and the future of the Republic of Korea,” and “We will have more dialogue and cooperate more deeply with the newly formed 22nd National Assembly and respond to the will of the people as a partner in national affairs.” He added.

Prime Minister Han complained, “Recently, our economy is showing signs of recovery in various indicators such as exports, investment, and employment, but the economic performance felt by the people is still difficult.”

Accordingly, he emphasized, “The government will put the stability of the people’s livelihood as the top priority and will do its best to ensure that the people can quickly experience changes in their lives.”

At the same time, he said, “From the people’s perspective, there cannot be separate government ministries,” and added, “I hope that all government ministries will work as a team and focus on resolving the people’s livelihood issues such as prices and promoting national tasks.”

In addition, he added, “Please make special efforts to improve related systems and provide financial support so that the livelihood tasks promised to the people can be quickly implemented and changes can be felt.”

In particular, he said, “Please do your best to explain in detail and transparently to the public the purpose and effect of the policies promoted by the government from the public’s perspective.”

He also mentioned, “I hope that you will work closely with the ruling and opposition parties to handle urgent livelihood economic bills as much as possible so that the 21st National Assembly, which has about a month left, can be successful.”

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Han said, “At today’s cabinet meeting, the results of last year’s national financial settlement will be reported.”

He continued, “The government has shifted to a sound fiscal stance and implemented the most intensive expenditure restructuring in history with the goal of suppressing national debt at 53% of GDP by 2027 and has been strictly managing the total fiscal amount.”

As a result, the growth of national debt has slowed sharply, and major international credit rating agencies are evaluating Korea’s external credit rating positively.

Despite the unexpected decline in tax revenues in 2023, expenditure restructuring efforts allowed the national debt to be managed within the plan without additional government bond issuance.

In relation to this, Prime Minister Han emphasized, “Sound finances are a promise that the government will do its job properly and not pass on debt and burden to future generations.”

At the same time, he pledged, “The government will work harder to revitalize our economy and make it more tangible for the people while maintaining fiscal sustainability.”

Prime Minister Han said, “As the spring weather continues, the number of outdoor activities and outings is increasing, and various local events are being held.” He added, “Related ministries and local governments, led by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, will thoroughly inspect safety sites in their respective areas and take necessary measures.” “Please take action quickly and in advance,” he instructed.

In particular, he requested, “As spring is the time when forest fires occur the most, we ask that relevant ministries and local governments operate a close cooperation system and make every effort to prevent forest fires and respond quickly to the field.”
