0 As the country gears up for the 2024 general elections, the lawmaker for Wa West Constituency in the Upper West Region and a retired Police officer, Peter Lanchene Toobu has called on the Electoral Commission (EC) to ensure that civility prevails throughout the electoral process.
He said Ghanaians are eager to see a peaceful and issue-based campaign that focuses on the country’s development rather than personal attacks and insults.
Peter Lanchene Toobu, who was addressing the media shortly after his successful filing of the nomination process, emphasized civility, as he believes the Electoral Commission (EC) can help create an environment conducive to peaceful elections.
He urged the Electoral Commission to be more circumspect to avoid petty errors which could plunge the country into chaos.
“We are not going into war, election 2024 is not a matter of military, police or men and women in uniform with guns. It is all about going to the polling station and getting to cast your ballot, allow the ballot to be counted and let the sovereign will of the people prevail. That is basically democracy,” the retired police officer mentioned.
He expressed shock as to why President Akufo-Addo in 2020 superintended over an election that led to the death of 8 people.
“That was unacceptable, and I don’t think we need to repeat that anytime, anywhere again,” he fumed.
On the aspect of the Electoral Commission, the lawmaker stated that the electoral roll is the foundation of peace and war hence, Madam Jean Mensa should consult experienced people like Dr Afari-Gyan for guidance in her dealings, while urging the EC to take concrete steps to promote civility in the electioneering process.
“Nobody can change the results. What is the duty of the Electoral Commission? Announce what the people say you should announce. Count, put figures together and just basically announce. You can’t add a figure, if your mathematics is wrong, you cause trouble,” he noted.
Though his filing process was nearly disrupted by rains, that never stopped his supporters from coming out in their numbers to support him go through the process.
He said the NDC in Wa West Constituency is targeting 80 per cent of the total votes cast. “A minimum of 40,000 votes is my target in Wa West.”
