Vladislav Bakalchuk, the estranged husband of Tatyana Bakalchuk, founder of the online retail giant Wildberries, was arrested and charged with murder on Thursday following a deadly shootout at the company’s Moscow office.
The incident, which occurred just blocks from the Kremlin, resulted in two fatalities and left seven others wounded, including police officers.
The shooting on Wednesday escalated a bitter dispute between the couple over the future of Wildberries, Russia’s largest online retailer and a major competitor to Amazon. Tatyana Bakalchuk filed for divorce in July amid tensions surrounding Wildberries’ planned merger with outdoor advertising firm Russ Group, announced in June.
Vladislav claims he arrived for a pre-arranged meeting and asserts that staff at the Wildberries office fired the first shots. In contrast, Tatyana accused him and his associates of attempting to seize the office, denying any meeting was scheduled.
Following his arrest, Vladislav’s lawyers condemned the charges of murder and attempted murder of a law enforcement officer as a “blatant and unprecedented violation” of his rights.
The ongoing business dispute centres on the merger that formed RVB, a new company led by CEO Robert Mirzoyan, which reduced Tatyana’s ownership stake from 99% in Wildberries to approximately 65% in RVB. Vladislav has suggested that Tatyana is being manipulated in the negotiations, a claim she has dismissed.
The Kremlin has expressed support for the merger, with President Vladimir Putin backing the initiative but remaining uninvolved in its proceedings.
In a heartfelt video posted on Telegram, Tatyana addressed Vladislav directly, questioning his actions and their impact on their family.
This incident recalls the violent corporate battles of the 1990s in Russia, a time characterized by fierce struggles for control following the collapse of the Soviet Union.
