0 President John Dramani Mahama has tasked newly appointed Sports Minister Kofi Adams to begin his efforts to revive Ghana’s struggling sports sector with the Ghana Football Association (GFA), emphasising the urgent need to restore the Black Stars to their former glory.
Speaking at Adams’ swearing-in ceremony at the Jubilee House in Accra on Friday, Mahama did not mince words about the current state of Ghanaian football. With the Black Stars failing to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) for the first time in two decades, the president made it clear that a major transformation was needed, starting with the GFA.
“The Honourable Kofi Iddie Adams, Minister for Sports and Recreation, I don’t envy your job,” Mahama said.
“You have the monumental task of restoring Ghana to its pride of place in African and world sports. The shambles that is Ghana sports today is completely unacceptable. And I know the Ghana Football Association would be a good place to start.”
GFA has been tasked to adopt transparency, professionalism, and modern management practices to rebuild the Black Stars. Ghana’s football governing body has faced criticism over poor planning, administrative lapses, and lack of accountability, all of which have contributed to the national team’s struggles.
The Black Stars, once dominant in African football, have endured a series of setbacks, including early exits from recent AFCON tournaments and a decline in their global reputation.
Mahama believes that Adams must work closely with the GFA to restructure the sport, focusing on grassroots development, better player management, and long-term planning.
