0 The E-Levy, Covid Tax, Emissions Tax and Growth and Sustainability Tax are legitimate candidates for abolition in the 2025 Budget, the Director of Research at the Institue of Economic Affairs (IEA) Dr John Kwakye has said.
However, the economist expressed the view that, for revenue and deterrence purposes, the Betting Tax deserves to be maintained.
He urged the Mahama administration to seriously exploit e-commerce tax.
The Mahama administration is seeking to remove the 10 % betting tax following the promise made in the 2024 election period.
“Scrapping the Betting Tax will not affect the forward march of the economy,” he said. He added that increasing taxes is not the only way to boost revenue. “You don’t have to increase taxes to increase revenue. What is important is to increase compliance.”
Rather than introducing new taxes, Dr. Forson noted he intends to improve compliance with existing tax laws to enhance revenue collection. He further stressed that Ghana’s fiscal challenges cannot be solved solely by increasing revenue but also require prudent management of expenditures.
“It’s not always about revenue, but expenditure,” he stated.
But in a post on his X page, Dr John Kwakye said “The E-Levy, Covid Tax, Emissions Tax and Growth and Sustainability Tax are legitimate candidates for abolition in the 2025 Budget. However, in my view, for revenue and deterrence purposes, the Betting Tax deserves to be maintained. Gov’t must also seriously exploit e-commerce tax.”
