Casual workers at the Northern Regional Hospital (Tamale Central Hospital) have embarked on an indefinite strike starting today, Monday, March 3, 2025, over months of unpaid allowances.
As a result of the strike, the hospital has not been cleaned, and other critical casual service providers have also failed to report to work.
For the past three weeks, the casual workers have repeatedly notified hospital management of their intention to strike.
Confirming the incident to 3news.com, the Medical Superintendent of the hospital, Dr. Bashiru Abdul Majeed, stated that the situation is severely affecting healthcare delivery.
“Our situation has deteriorated further. Our casual workers have embarked on a strike, and this will only worsen our challenges,” he said.
The Northern Regional Hospital, formerly known as Tamale Central Hospital, is facing imminent shutdown due to mounting debt. The hospital owes GH₵3,360,046.74 following an overpayment by the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA).
In March 2018, an audit conducted by the NHIA revealed that GH₵4,223,949.02 was mistakenly paid to the hospital due to duplicate claims from 15,876 submissions for reimbursement.
Between November 2023 and now, the NHIA has deducted GH₵863,902.83, leaving an outstanding balance of GH₵3,360,046.74.
In a letter dated Friday, February 13, 2025, with reference number GHS/NR/NRH, addressed to the Chief Executive Officer of the NHIA, the hospital expressed concerns that the financial burden is significantly affecting healthcare delivery, putting the facility at risk of closure.
