President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his commitment to reviving Ghana’s struggling economy, declaring that hardship must not become the nation’s norm.

Speaking at the launch of the 2025 National Economic Dialogue in Accra, Mahama emphasized the urgent need for solutions to place Ghana on a sustainable growth trajectory.

We reject the notion that economic hardship must be our norm. We refuse to surrender to the forces of stagnation and decline. We are gathered here because we believe in Ghana’s ability to rise again,” he stated.

The two-day event, held at the Accra International Conference Centre, has brought together government officials, economic experts, business leaders, civil society organizations, and development partners to deliberate on strategies that will strengthen Ghana’s economic resilience.

President Mahama acknowledged the severe economic crisis he inherited, stressing that his administration is focused on finding solutions rather than dwelling on the struggles of the past.

We are not here merely to recount our struggles, nor are we here to resign ourselves to economic stagnation. We are here to seek solutions, to adopt strategies that will put us on a sustainable growth trajectory, and to ensure we build an economy that works for every Ghanaian,” he said.

He further emphasized that consensus-building and consultation will be key pillars of his administration, stating, “I would very much like to be remembered as the president who provided the platform for this to happen.

Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson also spoke at the event, warning that Ghana’s economic crisis is still unfolding and will require significant sacrifices from all citizens.

The full length of the crisis is still unravelling by the day. The situation requires significant sacrifice from all of us,” he noted.

Dr. Forson further revealed that almost all state-owned enterprises (SOEs) are in financial distress, from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to the Agricultural Development Bank (ADB).

President Mahama also stressed the importance of transparency in government procurement, calling for an end to the overuse of single-source contracts.

Single-sourced procurement must be rare, not the norm,” he declared, signaling a policy shift towards competitive bidding and fiscal accountability.

The outcomes of the National Economic Dialogue are expected to shape Ghana’s economic policies and influence the 2025 National Budget, which Finance Minister Dr. Forson will present on March 11, 2025.
