Chairman of the National Economic Dialogue Planning Committee, Dr. Ishmael Yamson, has expressed deep concern over Ghana’s economic challenges, stressing that poor governance and corruption have created a generation of disillusioned youth who see no future in the country.

Speaking at the opening of the National Economic Dialogue on Monday, March 3, 2025, Dr. Yamson lamented the rise of what he termed “Generation Hustlers”—young people who have lost hope in Ghana’s leadership and are eager to leave the country.

We have succeeded in creating a new generation of young people called Generation Hustlers, who have lost hope, respect, and confidence in their political leaders and their country and just want to leave Ghana behind them and relocate to foreign lands,” he stated.

While acknowledging that external shocks have played a role in Ghana’s economic difficulties, Dr. Yamson asserted that the country’s problems are primarily homegrown.

I must agree that in the last 68 years of independence, Ghana has also suffered severe disruptions and dislocations from external shocks, but the stark truth is that the overwhelming majority of our problems are homegrown,” he emphasized.

Dr. Yamson endorsed President John Dramani Mahama as the leader best suited to steer the country toward sustainable economic growth.

Someone must reset Ghana, and it can only be you [John Dramani Mahama]. Everywhere in the world that economic transformation has taken place, only one individual has led the charge, and the Lord has blessed you with the wisdom to take on that task,” he said.

He urged bold action to tackle corruption and economic mismanagement, calling on Mahama to implement reforms that would restore economic stability and rebuild public confidence.

It is time to liberate Ghana from economic mismanagement and corruption, to reset Ghana and put it on the path of sustainable and resilient growth,” Dr. Yamson concluded.

His remarks set the tone for the two-day National Economic Dialogue, where stakeholders from government, business, and civil society are expected to discuss policies that will drive Ghana’s economic recovery.
