The Member of Parliament for Wa West, Peter Lanchene Toobu, has called for legislative reforms to establish a fixed tenure for heads of security agencies, particularly the Inspector-General of Police (IGP).

According to him, securing the tenure of security chiefs will prevent undue political interference and promote stability within the security services.

His remarks follow an injunction filed by IMANI Africa and security expert Professor Kwesi Aning, seeking to block President John Dramani Mahama from dismissing Dr George Akuffo Dampare as IGP.

Despite the legal challenge, the Jubilee House has confirmed Dampare’s removal as part of broader security sector reforms under the Mahama administration.

Speaking on Channel One TV on Thursday, March 13, Toobu expressed concern over the influence of politics in the appointment and dismissal of security chiefs.

He argued that Ghana’s democracy has matured enough to warrant a shift in approach, ensuring that security leadership remains insulated from political transitions.

“If Ghanaians believe that the current system is flawed, we must consider establishing security of tenure for the IGP. This could be achieved through new legislation, repealing certain laws, or even constitutional amendments. A fresh legal framework could provide a structured process for appointments and dismissals, ultimately securing the tenure of security heads,” he stated.

Toobu reiterated his commitment to advocating for these changes, emphasising that as democracy evolves, security leaders should have a degree of job security.

He urged stakeholders to engage in discussions on the matter, stressing that implementing tenure security for security chiefs would enhance professionalism and long-term strategic planning within Ghana’s security institutions.
