Ghana striker Antoine Semenyo has revealed he backed himself to score a goal during this international break.
The 25-year-old has been a revelation for Bournemouth this season, scoring seven goals and providing four assists in the Premier League.
However, his performances for the Ghanaian national team, the Black Stars, have often left fans wanting more.
Before Friday’s World Cup qualifier against Chad, Semenyo had scored just two goals in 15 appearances for Ghana—a stark contrast to his stellar club form. But on a night when Ghana needed him most, the 25-year-old forward delivered in emphatic fashion.
He arrived at the Accra Sports Stadium with renewed determination and the impact was immediate. Just two minutes into the game, Semenyo pounced on a rebound to open the scoring, setting the tone for Ghana’s dominant display.
Later in the first half, his surging run into the box drew a foul, earning Jordan Ayew the penalty that made it 3-0.
“I told myself I needed to score when coming. I knew my form was good and scoring for the nation is something I had done in a long time. I am happy I got a goal today,” the Bournemouth striker said in the post-match press conference.
The victory marked Ghana’s first five-goal haul since 2020 and offered a welcome respite from their recent scoring struggles. During the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, the Black Stars managed just three goals across six matches, a drought Semenyo acknowledged.
“We struggled for goals in the last games but we got into the right places in today’s game which resulted in what we saw. Hopefully we can do same on Monday.”
Ghana currently top Group I in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers and will face Madagascar on Monday.
