President John Dramani Mahama has sent a hearty congratulations to the national team, the Black Stars on the 5-0 win against their Chadian counterparts.

The Stars walloped the Les Saos at the Accra Sports Stadium to the delight of the mammoth crowd that gathered to witness the critical World Cup qualifier.

The ecstasy that was engendered by the rare show of skill by the Black Stars, who until today were despised by many a Ghanaian football enthusiast, seems to have reached the seat of government.

And President Mahama could not hide his elation. Less than an hour after the showpiece of a match by the Stars, the first gentleman of the land posted on X,

“I had a good appetite for dinner after the Black Stars’ 5-0 victory. Congrats guys!”

However, he had a warning to boot, “Let this victory not make us complacent. This should be the beginning of bringing back the LOVE.”

“Next focus: Madagascar. Go Black Stars!” President Mahama wrote on March 21.

The Black Stars’ victory propelled Ghana to the top of Group I, setting the stage for a pivotal showdown with Madagascar on Monday.

From kickoff, Ghana’s high-pressing strategy left Chad reeling. The breakthrough arrived early when Antoine Semenyo capitalized on a goalmouth scramble, slotting home after a series of ricochets in the box.

Jordan Ayew, though, squandered a gilt-edged chance moments later, ballooning a shot over the bar from point-blank range.

The Black Stars’ relentless pressure soon paid dividends. Inaki Williams rose to meet a pinpoint cross from Kinglsey Schindler with a thumping header, fulfilling his pre-match pledge to score.

Five minutes later, Jordan Ayew atoned for his earlier miss by converting a penalty after Semenyo was fouled in the box. By halftime, Ghana led 3-0, with Chad failing to muster a single shot on target.

The second half mirrored the first in intensity. Mohammed Salisu doubled his season’s tally with a powerful header from Ernest Nuamah’s corner, while Nuamah himself sealed the rout with a composed finish after a slick backheel assist from Ayew.

Coach Otto Addo rotated his squad late in the game, introducing debutant Lawrence Agyekum and substitutes Kamaldeen Sulemana, Francis Abu, Jerome Opoku, and Jerry Afriyie. Though Mohammed Kudus and Afriyie spurned late chances, the damage was already done.

This resounding victory marked Ghana’s first five-goal haul since a 2020 friendly against Qatar and Chad’s worst competitive defeat since 2015.

The Black Stars now turn their focus to Monday’s clash with Madagascar in Morocco as Ghana aim to take a big step towards qualification for the 2026 World Cup.
