0 The Black Queens are winless in their last five games, but ahead of the team’s training tour double-header against Senegal, coach of the side, Kim Lars Bjorkegren, is confident his side can turn things around.
Kim Lars Bjorkegren was officially unveiled in February as the coach of the team, replacing erstwhile boss Nora Hauptle, who is now with Zambia’s Copper Queens.
Since his appointment, Bjorkegren has been vocal, talking about his plans of a turn around and building from Nora’s successful stint.
However, Bjorkegren fell short in his first assignment for Ghana, suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat to Morocco in a friendly game in February.
The coach is after his first win as Black Queens boss, after Ghana’s scheduled game with Raja Athletic Casablanca Women was called off in February.
Standing in Bjorkegren’s way is Senegal, a team Ghana beat 4-0 over two games 12 months ago.
The double-header against Senegal is part of the team’s preparations for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), which will take place in the summer.
Despite Bjorkegren’s desire to hit the ground running as coach, the bigger picture is securing a first win for Ghana in five games, something Bjorkegren believes his players have the potential to carry out.
“Like i said, they [Senegal] play physical. They have a couple of really good players. We need to be ready. Also, like I said, i think the potential in our team is good enough to win the game, he said in his pre-match presser.
“I expect us to control a little bit more of the game, create more chances than we did in Morocco and hopefully score some goals,” he added.
The Black Queens have the opportunity to pick up a first win since December 2023 when they face Senegal on Saturday and Tuesday.
