The Ghana Boxing Authority’s alleged negligence in their duties during a boxing match John Mbanugu and Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju is believed to have contributed to the untimely death of the 40-year-old Nigerian boxer, according to Remi Aboderin, General Secretary of the Nigerian Boxing Board of Control.
The Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) officially confirmed the death of Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju who tragically passed away after collapsing during a bout at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra on Saturday night.
Olanrewaju was facing Accra-born John Mbanugu, also known as Power, in an undercardon fight of Ghana’s Professional Boxing League when the unfortunate incident occurred.
Midway through the fight, Olanrewaju suddenly collapsed in the ring, prompting the referee to call for immediate medical assistance. Despite urgent efforts to revive him, the 40-year-old boxer remained unresponsive and was rushed to Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
In an official statement, the Nigerian Boxing Board of Control earlier on Tuesday called on the Ghana Boxing Authority to provide compensation to the family of the deceased boxer.
In an exclusive interview with 3Sports, the General Secretary emphasized that all evidence points to the Ghana Boxing Authority’s failure to adhere to the rules and regulations of the sport, which, in his opinion, triggered the tragic event.
“In boxing, sometimes these things are hard to happen. We all know that. What we are saying is that , this thing that have happened, what triggered it? All evidences show the the Ghana Boxing Authority GBA) was not up to their responsibilities.”
“So they should pay compensation. That’s what we are asking. If it had happened naturally with all the regulations in the sports followed, we won’t have any reasons to ask GBA to pay.”
“We are not happy, the GBA equally is not happy, but if the rules and regulations of the sport were followed before such thing happened, then we won’t ask for compensation. But we are saying it was not followed.”
Meanwhile the Ministry of Sports and Recreation has established a seven-member committee to investigate the death of Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju.
This move aims to determine the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident during a match against Ghana’s John Mbanugu.
