Korea-Romania leaders to expand cooperation in strategic areas such as defense and nuclear power

Adoption of ‘Joint Statement on Strengthening the Strategic Partnership between the Republic of Korea and Romania’
[Kim Seung-hwan, Mobile Reporter] President Yoon Suk-yeol held a summit meeting with Romanian President Klaus Werner Iohannis, who is on an official visit to the ROK on 23 March, and exchanged a wide range of views on ways to enhance practical cooperation between the two countries and the regional and international situation.
The two leaders assessed that bilateral relations are deepening in various fields on the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the establishment of the ROK-Romania strategic partnership last year, and adopted a “Joint Statement on Strengthening the Strategic Partnership” between the two countries to develop bilateral cooperation in a more strategic and future-oriented manner.
In addition, the two leaders appreciated the encouraging fact that bilateral trade reached a record high last year, and agreed to build an optimal partnership in the field of defense based on the “Agreement on Defense Cooperation” between the two governments signed on the occasion of the summit.

In this regard, President Yoon said that following the export of the South Korean Shingung missile last year, defense cooperation in various products between the two countries is being discussed, and he hopes that South Korea, a strategic partner, will actively contribute to Romania’s military modernization project.
In response, President Iohannis said that the geopolitical and security situation has made cooperation between the two countries even more important, and that he is very serious about defense cooperation with the ROK.
The two leaders agreed that nuclear power cooperation between the two countries is developing with the award of the “Tritium Removal Facility Construction Project at the Chernavoda Nuclear Power Plant” last year, and discussed various nuclear power plant cooperation plans, such as the improvement of nuclear power plant facilities and the construction of small modular reactors (SMRs).
The two leaders agreed to promote related cooperation based on the MOU on nuclear power cooperation signed on the occasion of their visit, and to explore various ways of cooperation in the fields of renewable energy and carbon-free energy, including nuclear power plants.
The Romanian side expressed its support for our Carbon-Free Energy (CFE) Initiative.
The two leaders also agreed to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the areas of port infrastructure, economic security, cybersecurity, culture and arts and people-to-people exchanges, and disaster safety.
Meanwhile, the two leaders condemned North Korea’s continued provocations and Russia-North Korea military cooperation, and agreed to work closely with the international community to denuclearize North Korea and promote human rights.
They also agreed that cooperation between the ROK and Europe is becoming more important amid the changed international situation, and agreed to work together to strengthen cooperation between the ROK and NATO.
They also agreed to continue working together on humanitarian aid and reconstruction in Ukraine.
Following the summit talks, the two leaders attended the signing ceremony of the agreement between the ROK and Romanian governments and the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the relevant ministries.Kim Seung-hwan Mobile Reporting Reportershkim1031@naver.com
