0 Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has expressed grave concern over the deteriorating state of the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, popularly known as Ridge Hospital, following an unannounced inspection on Friday, April 11, 2025.
Speaking to the media during the visit, the Minister said,
“This is not the Ridge Hospital we handed over to the former administration. It must go back to its glory.”
The inspection revealed worrying conditions at the facility, particularly within the emergency unit. Key diagnostic equipment, including the MRI and CT scan machines, have reportedly been out of service for over two years—severely impacting the hospital’s ability to deliver timely and effective medical care.
Additionally, it was discovered that none of the washrooms in the emergency department are functional.
Akandoh was visibly dissatisfied and emphasized that the hospital should focus on healing, not conflict:
“We don’t want to turn Ridge Hospital into a litigation centre. All health professionals involved have been told to cease fire.”
Touching on the management of medical equipment, the Minister pointed out the contradiction in hospitals charging fees for services using medical equipment yet expecting the government to replace or maintain them once obsolete.
“Hospitals run these equipments at a fee, yet when the equipment are obsolete, they want government to maintain them or replace them,” he remarked.
The Minister also engaged in a closed-door meeting with the hospital’s management to identify actionable solutions and initiate immediate interventions to restore Ridge Hospital’s operations and service delivery standards.
