President John Dramani Mahama has announced the forthcoming launch of the Ghana Labour Export Programme, aimed at tackling unemployment by offering young Ghanaians the opportunity to work abroad under structured, fixed-term arrangements.

He stated that the initiative forms part of the government’s broader strategy to create sustainable employment through international partnerships.

Addressing residents in the Ahafo Region on Saturday, 31st May, as part of his national ‘Thank You’ tour, President Mahama revealed that the government is in advanced talks with several countries experiencing labour shortages.

The goal, he explained, is to place skilled Ghanaian professionals in temporary employment roles overseas, thereby easing domestic job pressures.

“We will soon launch the Ghana Labour Export Programme. There are labour shortages in many countries across the world. We are negotiating with several of those countries to export some of our professionals to work on fixed-term contracts abroad,” President Mahama stated.

The programme will span various sectors, including agriculture, construction, healthcare, hospitality, and logistics.

Categories of workers set to benefit include electricians, welders, mechanics, nurses, chefs, caterers, drivers, warehouse supervisors, and machine operators—highlighting the broad scope of skills in demand internationally.

The President also disclosed that a contract has already been signed with one country for the deployment of 2,000 temporary workers.

He assured citizens that the recruitment process will be transparent and inclusive, with equal representation from all 16 regions of Ghana, including the Ahafo Region.

“Young qualified people will be selected fairly from all the 16 regions of our country, including Ahafo,” he affirmed.
