Accra’s central business district has transformed dramatically following a recent decongestion exercise, with previously crowded streets now enjoying order, space, and free-flowing traffic.

While city authorities are being praised for restoring sanity to the capital’s busiest zones, many displaced traders say they remain uncertain about their future.

JoyNews’ Valentina Semenyo has been engaging with the affected vendors and reports that many are now appealing to the government to allocate designated spaces where they can continue to ply their trade legally.

While the pavements of the central business district now enjoy a serene and more organised environment, there is a growing concern among the petty traders who were removed during the exercise.

Many say their livelihoods have been severely disrupted, and they are urging city authorities to establish well-planned market spaces where they can operate safely, without fear of eviction.

Some traders expressed appreciation for the order that the decongestion has brought.

One trader, Salomey Adjetey, noted, “The cleared spaces have made it easier for customers to navigate the market and for traders to display their goods more effectively.”

Despite those improvements, the call for a long-term solution is growing louder.

The traders insist that without designated market areas, they will be forced back onto the pavements, risking further confrontations with city authorities.
