Four people, including three schoolchildren and a taxi driver, have died following a road crash on the Winneba–Cape Coast highway, shortly after the Winneba Junction.

According to the Winneba Municipal Fire Service, the incident occurred on Monday when a Toyota RAV4 with registration number GN 5505-18 reportedly attempted to overtake another vehicle and collided head-on with a Hyundai Jet taxi, registered CR 748-20.

The taxi was transporting seven pupils from Winneba to Apam.

The driver of the taxi died at the scene, while all seven pupils and another passenger were rushed to the Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital.

Three of the pupils, who were in critical condition, passed away Tuesday morning during treatment.

Fire Service Commander DO2 Fredrick Adu-Roku confirmed that the pupils were from St. Paul’s School and Uncle Rich Preparatory School, both located in Winneba.

He added that preliminary investigations suggest human error contributed to the crash.

“About 70 percent of accident cases in Ghana are caused by human factors,” Adu-Roku noted, urging motorists to drive cautiously and adhere to traffic regulations to prevent avoidable tragedies.
