Chae Sang-byeong – Expects and prepares for all possible topics, including the Special Prosecutor for Mrs. Kim, the Office of Senior Secretary to the President for Civil Affairs, and medical reform. Taking off the image of lack of communication, laying the groundwork for a breakthrough in government affairs

(Seoul = Yonhap News) [ipn News] To mark the second anniversary of his inauguration (10th), President Yoon Seok-yeol will hold a press conference at the Presidential Office in Yongsan on the 9th to reveal his position on running state affairs and various pending issues.

Spokesperson Kim Soo-kyung said in a briefing at the Presidential Office in Yongsan on the 6th, “We are planning to hold a press conference for the second anniversary of our inauguration in the Presidential Office briefing room on the 9th.” He added, “Prior to the press conference, we will first explain the tone and policy situation of the past two years of government administration through a video in the office. “I will explain this and tell you the plan for running the government for the next three years,” he said.

The plan is to first explain the national administration policy and plans directly to the public in an opening statement at the President’s office around 10 a.m., then move to the conference room and freely answer questions with reporters.

An official from the President’s Office said, “The briefing room is to focus only on Q&A,” and added, “President Yoon said he would expand communication points with the media, and the purpose is to directly explain in detail what the public wants to know or misunderstand.”

The official reported that President Yoon told his staff, “Let’s prepare for questions that the public will really be curious about.”

To this end, President Yoon is known to be preparing for the interview, expecting that questions will be asked on all possible topics.

President Yoon’s press conference is one year and nine months since his 100th day in office in August 2022. Earlier this year, he did not hold a separate New Year’s conference, but instead held a special conversation with KBS to reveal his plans for the new year.

As the lack of direct communication has been consistently pointed out, President Yoon is expected to show an active role in communication through this press conference in order to dispel such views.

There will be no topic or time limit for the Q&A, but the moderator will appropriately distribute questions from various media on site.

The President’s Office said that excluding the presentations that will be held in the office, only the question and answer session will last about an hour.

President Yoon has been emphasizing ‘communication and cooperation’ since the crushing defeat in the 22nd National Assembly general election held on April 11.

If the meeting with Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, held for the first time since taking office on the 29th of last month, was the first step in line with the changed tone, the conference marking the second anniversary of the inauguration can be interpreted as a follow-up step.

Above all, the biggest concern is what views President Yoon will personally express on various sensitive issues.

Currently, there are a lot of major pending issues, such as the ‘Act on the Appointment of Special Prosecutors for Obstructing the Truth of Marines Who Killed in the Line of Duty and Concealment of Incidents’ (Special Prosecutor Chae Sang-byeong Act), suspicions related to his wife, Kim Kun-hee, revival of the Office of Senior Secretary to the President for Civil Affairs, and expansion of medical schools.

President Yoon is expected to first explain the legal problems related to the Special Prosecutor Chae Sang-byeong Act, which was passed by the opposition party in the National Assembly.

The general observation is that President Yoon will point out the problems with the Special Prosecutor Act at a press conference and then exercise his right to request reconsideration (veto) once the bill is transferred to the government.

President Yoon is expected to also comment on the allegations against Ms. Kim. Currently, the Democratic Party is announcing that it will propose the ‘Ms. Kim Special Prosecutor Act’ in the 22nd National Assembly by adding the suspicion of receiving luxury bags to the suspicion of stock price manipulation by Deutsche Motors.

President Yoon is likely to express a cautious stance, considering that the prosecution recently formed a team dedicated to investigating the suspicion of receiving Ms. Kim’s luxury bag under the direction of Prosecutor General Lee Won-seok and began a full-scale investigation.

There is also interest in whether a second annex to the President’s Office will be established to exclusively handle First Lady Kim. Regarding the second annexed office, the President’s Office said in January of this year, “If the majority of the people think it would be a good idea, we will consider establishing it.”

In addition, it is expected that he will seek understanding of the changes in the situation since his inauguration to the present regarding the revival of the Office of Senior Secretary to the President for Civil Affairs, where controversy arose over the breaking of his presidential pledge.

The establishment of the Office of Senior Secretary to the President for Civil Affairs is expected to highlight its inevitability and necessity by emphasizing that it will focus on gathering public sentiment so as not to have the side effect of taking over the assessment agency like in the past.

Prior to the press conference, President Yoon is expected to announce the establishment of the Office of Senior Secretary to the President for Civil Affairs on the 7th. Kim Joo-hyun, former Vice Minister of Justice, is being mentioned as a strong candidate for the first Senior Secretary for Civil Affairs.

Regarding medical reform, President Yoon is expected to repeatedly emphasize the need to expand the number of medical school students, while appealing to the government’s sincerity in reform and urging dialogue with the medical community.

On this day, the last day of the holiday, President Yoon is concentrating on preparing for the press conference without making a separate public schedule.

An official from the President’s Office met with reporters and said, “We are refining the final manuscript.”

Inside and outside of the political world, there was also an assessment that President Yoon’s recent public remarks, such as his public address on medical reform on the 1st of last month and his position after the general election through the Cabinet meeting on the 16th of the same month, were disappointing in terms of flexibility in content and communication method.

Accordingly, the President’s Office is working hard to ensure that the public can feel that President Yoon has changed significantly from before. There was an underlying recognition that in order to secure the driving force of government affairs for the remainder of the term, this conference should serve as an opportunity for a clear breakthrough and rebound.

An official from the President’s Office said in a phone call with Yonhap News, “As there have been criticisms about the President’s communication methods, we will make changes,” and added, “We plan to further increase communication with the public, such as on-site visits, including expanding contacts with the media.” .
