Didier Deschamps has surprised many by recalling N’Golo Kante to the France squad for Euro 2024.
Despite the midfielder’s move to Saudi Arabian club Al-Ittihad last year and his last international appearance dating back to 2022, Kante, 33, will have the opportunity to add to his 56 caps.
France’s squad notably excludes Chelsea striker Christopher Nkunku, who endured an injury-plagued debut season in London, as well as Crystal Palace winger Michael Olise.
Additionally, Chelsea’s Axel Disasi and Malo Gusto did not make the cut, while Premier League trio Alphonse Areola, William Saliba, and Ibrahima Konate are among those included.
Bayern Munich’s Lucas Hernandez misses out due to injury, while PSG winger Bradley Barcola earns his first call-up alongside established names like Kylian Mbappe, Olivier Giroud, and Antoine Griezmann.
Deschamps has opted for a 26-man squad immediately, in contrast to other nations naming preliminary lists ahead of the June 7 deadline to finalise selections.
France will face Luxembourg and Canada in warm-up friendlies before beginning their Euros campaign against Austria on June 17, followed by matches against the Netherlands and Poland.
