[ipn News] Recently, the Japanese Rising Sun flag symbol appeared several times in a video posted on the official YouTube channel of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), causing controversy.
During the Para Ice Hockey World Championships held in Calgary, Canada in mid-May, a match was held between Korea and Japan, and the rising sun flag symbol was included in the subtitles introducing the coaches and players of the Japanese team.
Seo Gyeong-deok, a professor at Sungshin Women’s University who has been carrying out a campaign to eradicate the rising sun flag around the world, said, “Many netizens reported this, so I checked and was surprised to see a lot of rising sun flags appearing in the video.”
In response to this, Professor Seo immediately sent a protest email to the International Paralympic Committee, urging a quick correction.

In the protest email, they said, “The Rising Sun flag has been used by the Japanese to mean large catches, childbirth, etc., but it symbolizes Japan’s militarism as the flag displayed at the forefront when Japan invaded Asian countries in the past.”
He also emphasized, “The reuse of the Rising Sun flag is a denial of Japan’s history of wars of aggression in the past, and it is an act that reminds Asians of the horrors of war and a symbol of fascism.”
In addition, while attaching a video about the Rising Sun Flag, he said, “FIFA, which acknowledged the historical fact, immediately stopped the Japanese cheering team from cheering the Rising Sun Flag at the last Qatar World Cup,” and demanded “immediate correction.”
Meanwhile, Professor Seo Kyung-deok is currently preparing a new multilingual video to eliminate the Rising Sun flag, which is still used at world-class sports competitions and global sports companies.
