National Assembly member Seong Il-jong elected as chairman of the National Defense Committee

[Mobile Reporter Nam Ki-woong] National Assembly member Seong Il-jong, who serves as Secretary General of the People Power Party, was elected as the 22nd National Defense Commission Chairman for the first half of the National Assembly at the National Assembly plenary session on the 27th and began his term.

Three-term lawmaker Seong Il-jong, a former Army ROTC officer, was elected as chairman of the National Defense Commission for the first half of his two-year term at the plenary session of the National Assembly held on the 27th.

In his speech immediately after being elected, Rep. Seong said, “It is a burden on my shoulders to be entrusted with such an important responsibility in the severe security situation surrounding the Korean Peninsula.” He added, “By building a strong security posture based on the solid ROK-US alliance, we will successfully complete the Yoon Seok-yeol administration’s Defense Innovation 4.0. “We will do our best to support defense exports,” he said.

He continued by emphasizing, “As there are no ruling or opposition parties in defense, we will strive to ensure that cooperation between the ruling and opposition parties is achieved solely for national security in the face of successive provocations by North Korea.”

Meanwhile, Rep. Seong Il-jong, who was elected to the third term in the general election last April, is the party’s policy and security official who served as the chairman of the People Power Policy Committee, secretary of the National Defense Committee of the National Assembly, and chairman of the National Security Committee of the People Power Party in the 21st National Assembly. After serving as Secretary General of the People Power Party, he took on the position of Chairman of the National Defense Committee of the National Assembly.

Meanwhile, Rep. Seong will concurrently hold the position of Secretary-General of the People Power Party and the position of Chairman of the National Defense Committee of the National Assembly, which he currently holds. The position of Secretary-General of the People Power Party will be newly appointed by the new party leader who will be elected at the People Power Party convention to be held on July 23. As it is expected that Rep. Seong will hold the position of Secretary General of the People Power Party and Chairman of the National Defense Committee of the National Assembly only until the end of the People Power Party National Convention.
