Signed a memorandum of understanding on R&D cooperation in biotechnology and health between Korea and Luxembourg

[Mobile Reporter Nam Ki-woong] The Ministry of Science and ICT will meet with the Luxembourg Minister of Higher Education and Research on July 4, 2024. After discussing ways to cooperate in science and technology between the two countries at the Grand Hyatt Hotel, it was announced that a memorandum of understanding on research and development cooperation in the bio and health fields was signed between Korea and Luxembourg.
Despite being a landlocked country with a small population and territory and surrounded by European powers, Luxembourg is one of the international financial centers and has one of the highest GDP per capita in the world.
In addition, based on a well-equipped digital infrastructure, it is leading innovation by converging information and communication technology with manufacturing, environment, health, logistics, space, and financial sectors.
Through this meeting, the ministers of the two countries reaffirmed that Korea and Luxembourg are important partners in the field of quantum science and technology, which is expected to play a pivotal role as a core hegemonic technology in the future. Following the signing of a memorandum of understanding on bilateral science and technology cooperation last year, the two countries’ We agreed to continue to strengthen our relationship.
They also discussed government support measures to promote international research and development cooperation, including joint research between researchers from both countries.
In addition, Luxembourg introduced a project to establish a Korean branch of the National Institute of Health under Luxembourg’s Ministry of Higher Education and Research and proposed strengthening cooperation in research and development in the bio and health fields with Korea centered on the branch.
Accordingly, for cooperation in the bio and health fields, the two countries signed the ‘Korea-Luxembourg Memorandum of Understanding on Research and Development Cooperation in the Bio and Health Fields’ with Minister of Higher Education Stefanie Obertin and Minister of Science and ICT Lee Jong-ho attending as representatives.
Through this memorandum of understanding, the two countries plan to strengthen cooperation in the bio and health fields, including application of artificial intelligence, use of precision medicine for personalized prevention, standardization of technology, and development of research facilities.
Minister of Science and ICT Lee Jong-ho said, “Biotechnology will develop by overcoming the limitations of existing biotechnology through the convergence of AI, nanotechnology, and robots,” adding, “The signing of this MOU will serve as an opportunity for joint research that can produce results for both countries.” “We look forward to discovering and promoting areas and specific business models,” he said.
