Sudan’s head coach, James Kwesi Appiah, has expressed his ambition to win the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.

The Ghanaian tactician guided Sudan to qualification under challenging circumstances, as the team played all their home games away due to the ongoing civil war.

Despite the adversity, Sudan showcased resilience and determination, securing a place in the tournament at the expense of Ghana, from whom they claimed four points in the qualifiers.

“Winning the trophy is my goal,” Appiah said in an interview with Akoma FM. “By God’s grace, we have qualified. We will prepare thoroughly to ensure we have a strong team before the AFCON. Once you’re in, you aim for the cup rather than coming out with nothing.”

Appiah highlighted the unpredictability of football, citing Ivory Coast’s triumph in the 2023 AFCON as a testament to the sport’s surprises. “Nothing is impossible in football. No team should be underestimated.”

The tournament begins on December 21, 2025, with the draw scheduled for January 25 in Rabat, Morocco.

Qualified teams include Morocco (hosts), Algeria, Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Comoros, DR Congo, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Mali, Senegal, South Africa, Sudan, Tunisia, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
